Monkeying Around with Some Monks*

*joke courtesy of my father.

I’ve spent the last couple of days hiking through rainforest and climbing about some caves – with monks.

They had road tripped for two days, and then hopped on the flight from Miri to Mulu National Park – where I met them.

They brought nuts, noodles and bananas. They loved energy drinks.

Monks on vacation.

It would have made a great film, one with a budget of $10M that would go on to sleepily collect money and a bunch of awards and would then be ordered to a sequel with at least seven very famous people playing monk sidekicks.

They shared everything – two energy drinks are currently coursing through my body, and laughed about everything.

They laughed when they made me guess their age and I was off by twenty years, “no stress, no age.”

We couldn’t talk about much – they didn’t speak English and I don’t speak Mandarin, but they were two of the jolliest people I’ve ever met.

About to head into a Clearwater Cave, which stretches for 220km
On the boat ride to the caves

Jungle goodness

We watched 3M bats emerge out of Deer Cave:
